Mobile and Devices
Flash And The City will have five workshops on Thursday, May 13 (the day before the conference officially kicks off). You’ll definitely want to come to Flash and the City a little early to be a part of the pre-conference tracks.
Overall Training Plan Overview
On May 13th, 2010, Flash and the City will be holding a one day workshop covering Mobile and Device development using Adobe tooling (e.g. Adobe CS5). The training runs from 9:00 am in the morning to 5:00pm in the evening.
Training will assume attendees have some previous background with both Flash and ActionScript, but not necessarily mobile and device experience.
Attendees will first get an overview of Flash and how it’s utilized on mobile and devices. From there, some of the new features of Adobe CS5 will be covered (e.g. Flash CS5, Device Central).
This will be followed up with tips for mobile development using AIR (e.g. AIR on Android) which will discuss the limitations and advantages of creating for mobiles as well as what content is suited for them.
In the final hour, litl will be presenting a new developer SDK for their Flash based webbook which supports Flash 10.1. They will cover how to develop for the device using Flash CS and Flash Builder using their SDK and their newly defined APIs.
Here’s the breakdown of the day.

Flash Development on Mobile & Devices
Scott Janousek (Hooken Mobile)
Scott will cover how the long road the Flash Platform has evolved from on devices, starting with its humble “PocketPC” beginnings to today, where Flash is supported on millions of devices, worldwide, in all shapes, form factors, and screen sizes!
Join Scott Janousek, a veteran in the Mobile and Device space with Flash, as he shares some of his stories and experiences from the “trenches”. Scott will speak about his four year journey as both an early adopter with Flash Lite, as well his most recent experiences with Flash 10.1 on various devices platforms.
Scott will cover real world device projects that leverage Flash Lite, Flash 10.x, and even some recent Flash-based experiences made for Android, including some valuable tips, tricks, and shared insights into the potentials of Flash on devices in the future.
Using Device APIs with Flash CS5 and Adobe Device Central
Max Antinori (Max Media)
Maxim Antinori will walk through an introduction to using the new device APIs that come with Flash CS5, including accelerometer, GPS, and multitouch.
Source files will be provided attendees so they can code along with the presenter, or follow along at their own pace. All coding and testing will be done using Flash CS5 and Adobe Device Central emulation, so no actual devices will be required.
Learn how to harness the location-awareness of the latest phones supporting Flash 10.1 to load relevant content for the user. Use multitouch to provide the interaction users expect to manipulate on-screen elements and use the accelerometer to provide intuitive functionality that simplifies UI and avoids superfluous keypad input and button events.
Tips for mobile development using AIR
Veronique Brossier (www.v-ro.com)
This session will discuss the advantages and limitations of creating for mobile devices and what content is best suited for them.
It will demonstrate the creation of an application using AIR for the iPhone and Android devices. Some of the techniques discussed will be: management of views, multi-touch technology, how to save data on the device, optimizing for performance, understanding Garbage Collection and using object pool, designing your UI for a small device, art creation and preparation, vector versus bitmap, text and fonts.
A litl SDK for Flash and Flex
Chuck Freedman and Kathryn Rotondo (Litl)
The litl AS3 SDK bridges Flash Player with the unique views and user input controls
found on the litl webbook.
Learn how to take our simple class library and build engaging and fun channels for the growing base of litl users. We’ll show you the Simulator, our control set and other samples that will have you coding litl Flash channels, our version of distributable apps, quickly and easily with both Flash Professional and Flash Builder.
